Spain Rodriguez and Mario Hernandez at the 2012 LATINO COMICS EXPO

The LATINO COMICS EXPO returns to the world-famous CARTOON ART MUSEUM in San Francisco this week on May 5 & 6, 2012.

Joining us for a rare comic book convention appearance is Spain Rodriguez, one of the original cartoonists of the late 1960s underground comix movement. Along with Robert Crumb, Gilbert Shelton, Victor Moscoso and many others, Spain paved the way for comics as an expression of raw social and political commentary.

With a career spanning 45 years, Spain's body of work includes numerous graphic novel collections, including Trashman Lives, Nightmare Alley, Cruisin' with the Hound: The Life and Times of Fred Toote and Che: A Graphic Biography. Spain will be appearing on Saturday for a special presentation, "In Conversation with Mario Hernandez", an informal talk with his friend and fellow cartoonist.

Mario Hernandez makes a return appearance to the Latino Comics Expo, following last year's inaugural event. In addition to his appearance with Spain Rodriguez, he'll also perform a reading of one of his stories and a Q&A on Sunday. Mario, along with his brothers Jaime and Gilbert, launched the long-running, critically acclaimed comic book series, LOVE & ROCKETS. The title is celebrating it's 30th Anniversary this year, with a major retrospective planned at the Cartoon Art Museum in the Fall. He recently collarborated with his brother Gilbert on the comic book CITIZEN REX

Both Mario and Spain have artwork in the exhibit LA RAZA COMICA: A CELEBRATION OF THE LATINO AMERICAN EXPERIENCE IN THE COMIC ARTS. The show runs at the Museum from May 5-Sept. 30, with the Opening Night Reception taking place on Friday, May 4.

Admission to the LATINO COMICS EXPO is included with your paid admission to the CARTOON ART MUSEUM.
